I’ll be driving all over Ireland this week. I’m going Dublin to Cobh to Waterford to Galway to Belfast. I know the order doesn’t make any geographical sense, but it’s like that for reasons. Any things rarely seen I should check out along the way? I’m not really touristy, but enjoy little historical landmarks and such. I know Cobh is touristy, but my grandfather’s family legt Ireland from there and my great grandfather’s destroyer was docked there during WWI. Thanks! An “Irish beef burrito” for your time.

Depends what you want to see and do I guess. Have you done Dublin, or have you just got there? I haven’t been for years but the standard touristy things include Temple Bar (lot of bars etc). This list covers most of the common places of interest although they leave ou t the Guinness Storehouse which the most visited site in the country.

Cobh won’t detain you that long - it’s a small town - but you see the remains of the piers from which generations of emigrants emigrated. There’s also a cathedral where you can remark on the swastikas proudly displayed on the floor as you walk in (put there in different times! ). You can also take a trip across to Spike Island which is a former military base and prison, but at this time of year access is limited to weekends and may be dependent on enough bookings.

Waterford is bigger and has a bit more history in terms of mediaeval towers and what’s called the Viking Triangle which Mr Google will tell you about.

I haven’t been to Galway in decades but from what I know everything seems to begin and end at Eyre Square.

Belfast markets itself around the Titanic which might seem an odd thing to do given that it didn’t last very long and also on i ts troubled recent history so you can take taxi tours around what used to be flashpoints.

Most of the above offer walking tours if that’s your t hing which will take you to places you mightn’t otherwise come across.

Thanks!

We hung out in Dublin last week and have done all the touristy stuff there before. The Guinness storehouse was pretty funny. Hearing them talking about it like a fine wine and watching Italian teens get drunk.

I was thinking more if you knew of any out of the way sort of stuff in between those cities as I have a rental and can go wherever. Last week we drove down to the Glendalough National Park and walked around the old monastic sites. Only saw a few other there. That sorta thing.

Well, you could try Newgrange and Brú na Bóinne which are kind of on the way to Belfast from the south or any of the other sites here or here.

You could visit Kilkenny if you’re near enough on your way it’s got a fair number of visitab le attractions).

Thanks again! I hit up Kilkenny a few years ago when I was here. Really cool place.
